black skies sunbeams and a dusty plain a rainbow, electric skies no rain lonely drops pound repellent soil the smell of expectancy in readiness for toil half chance rain half chance fire cockeyed bobs and willy willies are reaching for the sky hopes are rising dams are falling the bank is calling the hounds are howlin keep your chin up friends just do the best you can it’s hotter in fire than it is in the pan your loved ones burden is not the lack of rain it’s the sadness in your eyes, watching you in pain (it’s the sadness in your eyes as I hear you cry in pain)

well I’m driving into a rising sun and there’s a shimmer on the road there’s an eagle feeding on a beast too heavy to lift its own load I swerve across a double white line there’s a crest approaching fast that beast and me could share a common past that beast and me could share a common past we’ll I’m hauling out of Newcastle on the top road to Lightning Ridge drifting into a setting sun and onto a one lane bridge I’ll never know how we shared that road our mirrors kissed as we passed that Mack and me share a common past that Mack and me share a common past well the Gods they were shining on me the Gods they shone on my past yes the Gods were shining (down) on me those Gods they shone on my past what waits around the next corner we’ll I’m not the one to know don’t tempt fate if you’re running late keep your blood off the road keep your blood off the road (may the Gods shine on you may the Gods shine on you)

Ashes 03:57
heat mirage on the horizon wind howls and dust is a risin’ birds fall from trees it don’t feel like home to me smoke billows in the distance choppers provide resistance ground crews are mustering like ants to the danger like ants to the threat danger is here terror in the rearview there’s hell up ahead like nothing we knew arms open wide and helpless it don’t feel like home to me night falls and calm descends "firies" defend us, friends are among us eternity before the new day reveals the wrath, reveals the pain nothings the same yesterdays plans may be gone a new day begins at dawn count the costs, count the blessings move on or rebuild and stay nothings the same

you may not own a parcel of sand or you may be a lord of the land but when it’s time to be movin on you will return to the land alone you will return to the land alone we’re just visitors on this land a stranger to this world I am we’re the elements of our birth we all return one day to the earth we all return one day to the earth you may be a human being or you may be a creature thing but melt us all down to the elements maybe love is the point of difference yes maybe love is the only difference this life is no rehearsal when you’re gone there’s no reversal enjoy your time till the end of the line every day you live you’re in your prime every day you live is borrowed time

Wialki 03:10
well I cut my teeth on a 9g tractor pulling a 14 disc plough my mum she’s sittin’ there beside me she’d hold that brolley if it showed my dad’s on the inter diesel fumes and dust in his eyes we’re on the edge of the wheat belt no rain, just dust and flies well we go round and round putting seed in the ground singing all my favourite country songs as the wheels turn around oh how I love that diesel sound as the sun is climbing up the sky (now the clouds they’re forming in the sky) (as the rains starts falling from the sky) well we’re up well before the crack o’ dawn breakfast in the old bough shed dad’s up first he stokes that metters fire the billy boils and mum gets out of bed the ute tow starts the 9g the 9g tows the inter she fires we’re on the edge of the wheatbelt no rain just dust and flies horizon gazin’, pining, pining pining for mum's stew and apple pie here she comes over the hill I spy that old vanguard a trail of dust against that cloudy sky mum keeps those wheels turning while dad and I eat and check the sky we’re on the edge of the wheat belt with stew, apple pie and flies well I cut my teeth on a 9g tractor pulling a 14 disc plough

the old boys used to say this area won’t break any records but it’ll never let you down but these days you never can tell one thing’s for sure, it always rains, after a dry spell as the grey clouds roll over the hill as the wind picks up in the air a chill yes I’m wondering will the heavens release and give those on the land a little peace some have taken jobs in town to make ends meet and they work the farm on weekends with the kids they’re happy making enough to pay what they owe they didn’t need too much to preserve the seeds they’d sowed well some they fly in and out on a mine and some watch their old and new lives decline it’s their way of life that takes the blow you don’t need too much to preserve the seeds that you sow as the grey clouds roll over the hill as the wind picks up in the air a chill yes I’m wondering will the heavens release this time and give those on the land a little piece of mind

Why the Sky 02:56
I couldn’t tell you why the sky I couldn’t tell you why the sun I couldn’t tell you why the stars shone bright and I couldn’t tell you why the moon but now I see the starlight in your eyes and now I see the moon glow in your smile I feel the warmth of the sun in each embrace our space may have been here all along but I couldn’t tell you why the sky and I couldn’t tell you why the sun and I couldn’t tell you why the stars shine bright and I couldn’t tell you why the moon now I know that one and one is two and that’s the total sum of me and you your flower it bloomed and we became three three seasons of the sun and three were four now I can tell you why the sky and I can tell you why the sun and I can tell you why the stars they shine and I can tell you why the moon because you are the world to me because you are the world to me

about

The journey to this album is the result of a sequence
of fortunate events. I have played in cover bands for
most of my musical life and recently began playing solo.
People were asking for a copy of my record which I didn’t
have. This coincided with the writing of Wialki which was
picked up by the Sounds of the Wheatbelt - a WAM
(Western Australian Music) project. I wrote another sixteen songs in six months and in eight days I recorded seven of them and here we are - my first record. I hope you enjoy it. Pete Byfield

credits

released April 1, 2015

The song Wialki first appeared on Western Australian Musics Sounds of the Wheatbelt album. It was co produced by Joel Quartermain (Mushroom Music Publishing) and Matt Giovannangelo who also played on it. It also featured Sean Lillico and Lauren Arthur.
All other songs were produced by Joel Quartermain at Wasteland Studio in O'Connor Western Australia. The players were Pete Byfield, Joel Quartermain, Lee Jones and Nigel Bird.
We're just Visitors was co written by Pete Byfield and Joel Quartermain. All other songs written by Pete Byfield

"It's almost what you would call traditional country in a sense, but in another sense it's quite filmic, textural and wide. It sort of disarms you in a way with simplicity and then before you know it, you're in a sweeping landscape with hints of australian red dust and riders." William Bowden, King Willy Sound
